ORLANDO
BY SARAH RUHL
Costume Studio, Fall 2021
Inspired by the novel of the same name by Virginia Woolf, this plays follows the life journey of Orlando. Orlando begins their life as a man, and transforms in the 18th century into a woman. Struggling with love, long life, gender and their poetry Orlando grows and changes in each century they experience. This is a proto-queer story, and I wanted my design to honor the world Woolf was writing from by framing the play within the 1920s queer club scene. As such all costumes, regardless of the period and place they represent, are inspired by the aesthetics and tastes of the 20s, as this group of party-ers imagine their past as well as their potential future within the world.
